REPORTS TO: Child Care Supervisor

In offsite programs – reports to Head Educator

SUMMARY: As part of a child care team, provide the daily program for an age group of children in a safe, secure environment in accordance with the goals and objectives stated in the program statement, and in accordance with the pedagogy outlined in “How Learning Happens?” as well as the Ministry of Education guidelines.

A. RESPONSIBILITIES TO CHILDREN/FAMILIES

  • Treat each child with dignity, respect, love and care.
  • Create a warm, inviting secure environment that promotes growth and learning.
  • Provide for children personal and hygiene needs.
  • Assist the Educator to create programs that are geared to needs of the individual child with concern for his/her interests, abilities, individual style, and pace of learning. Assist in pedagogical documentation, reflective practice, and collaborative inquiry, based on “How Learning Happens?” which will be the basis for decisions on program content.
  • Discuss concerns regarding children with the program team.
  • Be familiar with persons permitted to pick up children.
  • Refer any parent questions regarding policies for admissions, attendance, fees, goals, and children’s progress to the Head Educator.

B. PROGRAM RESPONSIBILITIES

As part of the team in a program area:

  • Assist with the implementation of a developmentally appropriate program designed to help children develop their physical, emotional, social and cognitive skills.
  • Assist with the preparation of the program environment
  • Be aware of the Prohibited Practices and confirm that these practices are not allowed and do not occur.
  • A Vulnerable Sector check will be provided every 5 years.
  • Sign an Offence Declaration every calendar year no later than 15 days after the anniversary date of the most recent offence declaration or vulnerable sector check.
  • Be aware of policies and procedures that require yearly, sign off and review.
  • Have a Duty to Report any suspect that a child is, or may be, in need of protection, the Educator must make a report directly to the children’s aid society, in accordance with Child and Family Services Act.
  • Assist with implementation of scheduled program duties and field trips.

C. HEALTH AND SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain furniture and equipment to acceptable standards of cleanliness.
  • Identify safety issues/concerns to the Head Educator.
  • Observe children for signs of ill health.
  • Alert Head Educator to any signs of illness in children.
  • Comply with all organization policies and procedures including occupational health and safety, fire, emergency, hygiene, etc.
  • Implement basic first aid as required.

D. STAFF/TEAM RELATIONS

  • Practice and promote positive interpersonal relations.
  • Attend professional development, staff training and staff meetings as required.
  • Follow guidance and direction of Head Educator, Child Care Supervisor and consultants to the programs.

E. GENERAL

  • Maintain confidentiality of information pertaining to children, families and fellow team members.
  • Other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
