1. Main Purpose:
Provide nursing care to residents with short or long term illnesses whose needs are stabilized and may assist the Registered Nurse with care of residents whose needs are not stabilized.

2. Essential Skills & Responsibilities:
• Administers medications under the direction of a Registered Nurse using the following routes: oral, eye, ear, nose,
throat, topical, vaginal and rectal. This includes the administration of narcotics as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Performs nursing procedures consistent with the Standards of Nursing Practice, College of Nurses of Ontario.
• Under supervision, the RPN, assumes the role of Team Leader, guiding and directing the Personal Support Workers in the provision of high quality and safe resident care.
• Assists with the assessment of the residents’ needs, their plan of care and evaluation of the care provided.
• Partners with residents and their families in the provision of care;
• Provides for the residents’ emotional and physical comfort and safety.
• Observes the resident and report pertinent information and any change in the resident’s condition to the
Registered Nurse.
• Assists with provisions of the social or recreational activities for residents ie. encouraging participation and
transporting residents to activities.
• Assumes responsibility for personal and vocational growth and development, keeping abreast of trends in nursing and geriatric care.
• Assumes responsibility continual learning, keeping abreast of trends in nursing and geriatric care.
• Possesses strong interpersonal and communication skills with exceptional organizational and leadership ability.
• Performs other related duties as required and requested.
• Must have a proficient knowledge of the English language in order to take direction, complete verbal and written
documentation, provide guidance to Personal Support Workers and perform job related activities.
• Assists with the rehabilitation and preventative care in accordance with the plan of care ie. encourages independence, assisting with walking, active and passive exercises, etc.
• Performs health training to residents within the realm of his/her knowledge and training.
• Maintains regular attendance.
• Follows Employee Code of Conduct and all Lanark Lodge policies and procedures

3. Skill Requirement:
I. Knowledge: 2 year diploma Registered Nursing Assistant/Registered Practical Nurse and
CPR as a part of the core program. Current registration with the College of Nurses of
Ontario in good standing.
II. Experience: No previous experience required.
III. Judgement: The job requires adapting established methods or procedures. Work
involves a choice of methods or procedures.

4. Level of Effort:
I. Concentration: Frequent periods of long duration. Regular interruptions to work
flow/pace. Work demands imposed by many sources.
II. Physical Effort: Medium activity of intermediate duration. Work can be physically
demanding and may require different levels of physical exertion at times.
III. Dexterity: Requires coordination of coarse and fine movements, where speed is a
moderate consideration.

5. Responsibility:
I. Accountability: Actions could result in significant loss of time, resources or cause some
embarrassment within the department. Demonstrates accountability for his or her actions
and decision making with respect to the provision of care. Maintains confidential
information. Performs only acts which he/she has been trained and prepared for.
II. Safety of Others: High degree of care required to prevent injury or harm to others. Must
adhere to policies and procedures related to WHMIS, Infection Control, Fire & Safety, and
all related legislation and monitors work practices of others to promote their safety and
wellbeing. Is responsible and required to monitor and provide care to ensure the
residents safety and wellbeing. Is required to administer prescriptions.Protects own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting
unsafe conditions immediately and attending all relevant in-services regarding OH&S.
Follows all guidelines for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario
Occupational Health and Safety Act and corporate/departmental policies and
procedures.
III. Supervision: The job requires the employee to periodically assume some of the normal
supervisory responsibilities over others. Provides guidance to Personal Support Workers
in the provision of nursing care.
IV. Contacts: Deal with or settle requests, complaints or clarification of information.
Interacts with all staff, residents, visitors, volunteers, residents’ families and friends.

6. Working Conditions:
I. Disagreeable Conditions: The work is performed in an environment with occasional
exposure to major disagreeable conditions or hazards. Works in all resident personal and
recreational spaces within the facility.
